Save Energy & Money: Call for Tax Incentives on Geothermal Heat Pumps in the NYS Budget

Message from Bill Nowak,
Executive Director, NY-GEO.org

Dear Friends,

This is it. Can you help one more time?

The Assembly and Senate have included the 25% (up to $5k) geothermal tax credit and the sales tax exemption in their proposed 2016-2017 budgets.

The budget is scheduled to be approved by April 1. Things are fast and furious in Albany right now in negotiations between the legislature and the governor’s office.  The instinct to preserve state revenues is engaging in hand to hand combat with the instinct to help the environment and people of New York during this budget process.

We can win this one or we can lose it and NY-GEO is leaving no stone unturned.

PLEASE HELP US TODAY – We need you to take 2 easy steps:

1. Please call Governor Cuomo at 518-474-8390 - press 2 to leave a message or 3 to speak with an aide.  See below for both short and long sample messages.

A sample short message for the phone:

Please include BOTH the geothermal tax credit (S 6249) and sales tax exemption (S6250) in the final 2016-17 budget.  Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) cut greenhouse gases, save New Yorkers money and create green jobs.  These incentives would give GHPs parity with Solar PV.

2. Then send an email message to the Governor's aides and the legislative leaders who are negotiating the budget:

Copy the recipients below and paste in your “To” field in the email message:

A sample longer message for the email - your own words would be even better:

Dear Cuomo Administration Officials and Legislature Leaders

Please include BOTH the geothermal tax credit (S 6249) and sales tax exemption (S6250) in the final 2016-17 budget.  Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) cut greenhouse gases, save New Yorkers money and create green jobs.

I am sincerely thankful the NYS Senate and Assembly passed the geothermal heat pump (GHP) incentive bills unanimously in last year's legislative session.

I ask you to champion these GHP bills that will give geothermal heating and cooling parity with solar PV in New York's tax policy. The many New Yorkers currently employed installing GHPs and its suppliers are counting on you to help provide a level playing field for the industry to thrive.

Geothermal systems save money for New Yorkers, reduce peak electric demand, cut greenhouse gases and other pollutants and keep dollars in NY that would otherwise flow out of state to pay for fossil fuels to heat our homes and buildings. GHPs also provide local jobs that can't be outsourced. I am counting on you to help provide a level playing field for the industry to grow while creating and sustaining local jobs.

I look forward to your support in seeing that the provisions of S6249 and S6250 are part of this year's budget. These include a tax credit on residential installations of 25% up to $5,000 and a sales tax exemption on the equipment purchases – the same levels currently in place for solar PV.

In February, Governor Haley of South Carolina moved ahead of NY by signing an even stronger geothermal tax credit into law. Shouldn't NY be showing more support for geothermal heat pumps than South Carolina? NY is a leader in the battle against greenhouse gases taking over our environment. Increasing the penetration of GHP is very import to winning this battle. Please help put the Statewide GHP incentives in place.

There is no doubt that GHPs can significantly contribute to reducing our carbon footprint – your continued leadership and support will create a more sustainable future.

 Thanks for your support!
