Join us for the next Green Drinks at the always fabulous D'Arcy McGees with Bob Knoer and the organizers of the WNY Environmental Summit.

They're trying to make the Summit more innovative and poignant than ever with a fun, quick and interactive process where we'll solicit your input.

We're going to poll people with small note cards while they're socializing to find out:

What topics are you most interested in hearing expert speakers discuss?

What workshops or training sessions would be a draw and get you to attend the Environmental Summit this year?

Daemen Summit to include Solar Power Prospects

Keynote Address: Ian Diamond, a senior manager of commercial product development at SolarCity. SolarCity is building one of the world’s largest solar panel factories in the proposed RiverBend clean energy complex in South Buffalo. Mr. Diamond's talk is titled "The Was, Is, and Will Be of Solar Power."

Summit Address: Robert Knoer, a local environmental attorney and the former chairman of the Western New York Environmental Alliance.

 

Roundtable Discussion: Local progress in improving the environment, social justice, community sustainability, and future regional priorities.

Panel Participants: Justin Booth from Green Options Buffalo; Katy Duggan-Haas from Modern Recycling; Dennis Elsenbeck from National Grid; Melissa Fratello from Grassroots Gardens; Erin Heaney from the Clean Air Coalition; Brendan Mahaffey from the City of Buffalo Office of Planning; Ryan McPherson from the Western New York Environmental Alliance; Mary Rossi from the Western New York Stormwater Coalition; and Art Wheaton, from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations and the Western New York Apollo Alliance.

Scajaquada Summit on Water Quality

NY State Senator Antoine M. Thompson is gathering all stakeholders to discuss Scajaquada Creek water quality.

Thursday, August 19th from 10:00 to 11:30
Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society [MAP]

The meeting will last 90 minutes. Short opening presentations will be given by:

• Julie O'Neill - Executive Director, Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper

• Bogdan Fundalinski - Fundalinskistudio.com - History of the Creek and a proposal to increase flow

• Jerry Palumbo - NYSDEC - Regional Water Engineer - Sewer overflows into the Creek
  

• Jordan Dalton - Curator - Beyond the Multitudes - Scajaquada-centered Art Show in September

• Joseph Dispenza - President - Forest Lawn Cemetery - Proposal for the Creek which flows through the Cemetery
  

Come find out about plans and possibilities for cleaning up the creek and add your voice to the discussion. The purpose of this session will be to assemble stakeholders and those who have expressed concerns and ideas about improving the water quality in Scajaquada Creek. With help from participants we will update everyone on current plans and proposals and explore the best next steps for both short and long range improvements to Creek water quality.

The Senator would like to see this meeting result in an ongoing concentrated effort to improve Creek water quality. Some of the steps he would like to see explored and addressed are:

• Develop a way to regularly clean the trash racks and areas in the Creek where trash pools;

• Safely dredge pollution hot spots in the Creek, including the the “sediment” island that has formed in the Creek as it surfaces between the 198 and the Buffalo Historical Society);

• Create a wetland before the Creek goes underground to filter toxins from the Creek before it comes into Buffalo;

• Eliminate the sewer overflows that empty into the Creek;

• Define the process and develop an estimate of the cost to uncover the Creek as it flows from Pine Ridge Road to Forest Lawn Cemetery;

• Develop the institutional capacity to advocate for Scajaquada water quality and see projects through to their completion;

• Create a Scajaquada Creek Protection Zone where new projects would need to have either no impact or a net positive impact on Creek water quality

Opening remarks on “Extreme Home Makeover: The Aftermath” will be presented by Aaron Bartley, Executive Director, PUSH Buffalo.

Environmental Student Summit at UB

Power Shift New York

Environmental Student Summit

On April 16^th, 17^th, and 18^th, students from around Western, Central, and Upstate New York will be coming to the University at Buffalo for a 3-day conference on a wide variety of environmental topics. This will be the biggest student-organized environmental conference that UB has ever seen.

The summit will consist of speakers, panels, workshops, and environmental action, featuring Lois Gibbs, Senator Antoine Thompson, Walter Simpson, Margaret Wooster, and Dominic Frongillo as headlining speakers. Local environmental organizations, such as Buffalo ReUse, Buffalo Car Share, Massachusetts Avenue Project, Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, and PUSH Buffalo, will be featured at the conference as well.

The summit will also highlight students’ environmental work, and give like-minded students the chance to connect with one another. Other schools involved with the summit include SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Geneseo, Cornell University, Alfred University, and many more! The conference will also feature local bands playing great music on the evening of Friday, April 16.
