Former Top EPA Official to Speak at Roosevelt Inauguration Site in Buffalo

Judith Enck is a former top official in the Environmental Protection Agency during the Obama administration. She previously served as New York’s deputy secretary for the environment. 

Enck has a lot to say about climate change, the assault on environmental regulations and more-talk-than-action involving renewable energy.

LECTURE TOPICS:
The massive ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland are changing on a scale not seen since the end of the last ice age. As a warming climate pushes Earth’s frozen regions to a new state having less ice, important questions related to sea level emerge. 

The speed at which the ice can flow will be shown to be instrumental in any predictions of the future state of the ice sheets, motivating the quest for Earth’s fastest ice. Contemporary research using computational modeling to explore the hidden realms of the ice-sheets will be highlighted as a potential basis for determining the past, present, and future of ice flow.

Cary Nelson is a former President of the National Association of University Professors (AAUP - 2006-2012), and is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Illinois, Urbana. 

Professor Nelson writes: 

"For more than fifty years public understanding of the relationship between doubt and certainty in science has been shaped by fraudulent collaborations between industry and their university partners. Good university research has often been misrepresented and had its impact reduced as a result. It is time to set the record straight and honor principles that promote good practices."

Professor Nelson is author of the book No University Is an Island: Saving Academic Freedom, and a co-author of the AAUP’s important recent study, Recommended Principles & Practices to Guide Academic-Industry Relationships (13 June 2012; 268 pp.) The report begins with a sixteen-page “Summary of Recommendations.”
