Talk: Offshore Wind Works for Clean Energy and Green Jobs

We hope you can make it to the Thursday, 9/5/19 Sierra Club Writers Group to learn about a crisis situation where your help is needed.

Thanks to the efforts of a grass roots coalition of clean energy, labor and social justice activists, New York's recently enacted Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act mandates 100% carbon free electricity generation by 2040.  This puts us in line to blunt some of the worst impacts of the climate crisis. 

We will not meet this climate goal without thoroughly exploring New York’s windiest locations and the areas most accessible for solar development.

There is a move afoot by a couple County Legislators, supported by Rep. Chris Collins, to put Erie County on record opposed to wind energy along the shores of Lake Erie - one of the windiest areas in New York State.

If the County of New York's 2nd largest city starts premptively shutting down renewables it will be impossible for NYers to do our part in the fighting the climate emergency.

County Executive Mark Poloncarz recently released the report Erie County Commits to Paris - How Erie County Can Meet U.S. Target Reductions for Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Come get the facts on what the local sources are for greenhouse gases (GHG). Learn about the County's plans to reduce GHG emissions both in-house and in the community.

Eco-Friendly Electric Buses for Buffalo?

Sierra Club Niagara Group is advocating for the NFTA to purchase ELECTRIC BUSES, which have zero emissions and so are more eco-friendly than the existing buses.

The group is hosting a consultant to make a presentation about assisting transit agencies with the transition to electric buses on Thursday, June 8th, 6:00pm at the Crane Branch Library in Buffalo.

An electric bus will be on display at the Allentown Art Festival and the Elmwood Farmers' Market on Saturday, June 10th.

A New York State carbon tax bill was introduced in Sept. 2015 by two Democratic legislators, Assemblyman Kevin Cahill of Dutchess County and Sen. Kevin Parker of Brooklyn. 

The bill, A8372 Cahil / S6037 Parker, starts taxing CO2 emissions from coal, oil, natural gas and biofuels at $35 per ton and increases the rate annually by $15/ton, to a ceiling of $185 per ton. 

The bill proposes returning 60% of revenues to low- and moderate-income households, with the remaining funds used to prepare for climate change, invest in renewable energy, and build transportation infrastructure.

Meets this Monday, February 3rd

Presentation on Climate Science Basics

 

Frederick Stoss, MS, MLS - SUNY University at Buffalo Librarian for Biological Sciences, Ecology/Environmental Science, Geology and Math, will give a short presentation on Climate Change. 

Mr. Stoss has trained with the Climate Reality Project, founded by former Vice President Al Gore.

WHO:   Open to the public and free.  This event is geared toward those who wish to write about climate and clean energy issues, but all are welcome. 

WHAT: The Sierra Club's Climate and Clean Energy (CACE) Writers Group holds its February monthly meeting, co-sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo (UUCB) Social Justice Task Force

WHEN:  Monday, February 3rd from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. The presentation and Q&A will take 45 minutes to an hour, followed by a short break when non-writers are welcome to exit if they like, leaving 30-45 minutes to review recent media reports and discuss writing projects

WHERE: Unitarian Universalist Church - 695 Elmwood at Ferry.  Use the garden entrance - meeting is in the 2nd floor Alliance Room

Background:
MAKE A DIFFERENCE - The Sierra Club is setting up a Climate and Clean Energy Writers Group to encourage a stronger voice for local advocates in the regional dialogue on climate change and renewables.  The plan is to meet monthly, hear a short presentation on a relevant topic, discuss energy related news, letters and articles, and encourage each other to write for publication on topics of interest.

We are seeking writers of all ages and are very interested in getting the word out via various media, including print and the internet.  If you would like to write, critique writing, or track local news items, please let us know.

What is the process:
You are encouraged at any time to write letters to the editor, op-eds, blogs – any way to express your opinion about climate and clean energy issues. 
There is no process required. If you would like us to help you with fact checking or editing, or any form of encouragement, please contact us.
The monthly meetings are meant to provide stimulating information and a chance to talk together, but If you can’t make a given meeting, don’t let that stop you from expressing yourself.
